The History:

The Stanley is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. It was opened in 1909 by F. O. Stanley who sought to create some hospitality in Estes Park. Stanley did a great deal for the economic conditions in Estes Park in the early 1900's before his death in 1940.

Much of the building was built from timber taken from the Bear Lake area of Rocky Mountain National Park, from wood that was part of a fire that happened in 1900.

Ghost tours are offered at the Stanley, check in advance for dates and times. These tours take guests on a tour of the hotel, exploring the history of the hotel, including its associations with Stephen King's "The Shining".

The Haunting:

The Stanley is revered by TAPS as a prime haunt where paranormal activity reliably happens. A variety of different types of paranormal events have been recorded there.

" We were up there in May of this year (2009) and spent some time in the main hotel as well as the manor house. It was a great place to check out, but not much on the paranormal front this visit. We took a lot of phots and while we had several orbs and seem to appear in a pattern, i.e. when a specific person was present. I do want to go back, but a lot of the paranormal allure is turned a bit touristy. The walking tour cast $10 a head and if you are not a guest or there for an event it cost $5 to get into the parking lot. It is a place that I want to visit, and will, again. "
